Residential Roofing

Asphalt shingles are the most popular type of roof covering throughout our region. Many improvements to asphalt shingles have been made over the last decade. Asphalt shingles come in two basic types : fiberglass and organic… Organic shingles were made with a base substrate comprised of recyclable materials such as cotton, wool, paper, and wood pulp. The base was then saturated with asphalt to make it waterproof. Organic shingles are obsolete these days. Fiberglass shingles are the new norm ! Glass fiber shingles use woven fiberglass as its base. The base is then coated with asphalt which contains mineral fillers and makes the shingle waterproof. The asphalt saturated base is then covered with ceramic granules. The granules are designed to reflect UV rays, protect the asphalt base, and actually give shingles their color ! In the 1950’, a self-sealing asphalt strip was incorporated into the design of the shingle. The heat of the sun melts the strip and the shingles will seal. The seal of a shingle is similar to sealing an envelope and prevents wind uplift.

3-Tab asphalt shingles are the most basic protection offered in an asphalt shingle. The manufacturer warranty on 3-tab shingles is 25 yrs and the Wind rating is 60 mph. They are noticeably thinner and lighter in weight than an Architectural Grade shingle. For that reason, decking deficiencies sometimes show through on the 3-Tabs since they lay flat onto the decking. These shingles are commonly used for rental properties and when trying to roof on a budget.

The Architectural Laminate shingle is the thoroughbred of shingles when it comes to style, function, and price. The laminated layers provide additional thickness which in turn produces twice the wind rating of a 3-tab shingle. Architectural shingles have a limited lifetime warranty and a 130 mph wind rating. Material cost for Architectural shingles are typically .20 more per square foot than the 3-Tab. That’s an incredible bang for your buck considering the value and longevity of a Laminate shingle when compared to the 3-Tab.

Advancements in shingles have also led to Algae Resistance Technology. Water naturally promotes algae and fungus growth , especially on the North elevation of your home which gets the least amount of direct sunlight. Most shingle manufacturers and brands have built in algae resistance and offer limited protection warranties.

ROOF ANATOMY AND KEY FEATURES

Chimneys are a key component of a roof that require special attention and cannot be overlooked. We re-flash ALL of our chimneys and in some instances CUSTOM FABRICATE base and counterflashing on site. In addition, we install ice and water shield around the chimney perimeter as an additional line of defense. Ice and Water shield leak barrier is a peel and stick underlayment applied directly to the decking. Green Country spares no expense and installs ice and water shield on valleys, chimneys, skylights, and along walls. This is one of the many reasons we uphold our 7 yr Workmanship Warranty and have an A+ Rating on the BBB for the last 10 years.

Please read our Roofing Guidelines document for some specifics on the Installation process and roofing it right the first time!
